So many people are out of work that businesses can afford to be “choosy” - and when left to be “choosy”, they tend to choose people who have “experience” - the theory being that these folks will be easier to integrate, faster to train and more productive. Of course, that completely screws over just about anyone who just graduated. Even the one college grad I just hired interned with us for two summers prior to graduation. I’m glad I graduated in 1998…and came into a job market full of companies hiring recent college grads. I was way luckier than I realized at the time.
