This is what I’ve been listening to this week. Brian Wilson once famously described Smile as “a teenage symphony to God” and there are moments on the album where I don’t think that’s necessarily an overstatement. I first heard Smile as a bootleg back almost 20 years ago. It’s stuck with me ever since, due to both the record itself (although I long ago misplaced those bootleg cassettes) and this novel. Highly recommended. It’ll change your perception of The Beach Boys from “that Kokomo band” to at least being in the conversation as the best American band ever.
