I wonder if I’m just going to keep moving forward in a way where, every few years, I’ll have grown apart entirely from the things that felt vital and important at the time. If I’ll always be mortified by myself-five-years-ago, or if that’s something unique to coming of age.

And maybe if my tumblr was reblogs of funny jokes and pizza gifs that wouldn’t feel so scary, but a lot of this crap is personal writing that’s been partly if not wholly inspired by the people around me. And while I try to keep things positive and constructive, I know that I can also present direct, pointed opinions like they’re facts, and that’s dangerous. That’s dangerous material to leave out there.

But maybe that’s just a universal truth, you know? Maybe it’s dangerous to make anything in this world, and the internet just amplifies that in a way we can’t quite understand yet. All I know is that this is the second time in my decade-long blogging career that someone I had no intention of ever reading my material has not only located, but read and remarked on something I’ve written about them, and it feels really crappy. Not because I didn’t necessarily mean what I said at the time, but because writing isn’t always meant for posterity.

My thoughts on this: Everything you put on the internet is public. That should be the default assumption. If you don’t want the entire world - including everyone you know - reading it, don’t post it. And don’t assume because it’s “protected” or “friends only” or whatever that it’ll stay that way. It won’t.
